Visiting local islands gives guests an opportunity to see a different side of the Maldives beyond the typical resort experience. Our local island experiences offer a chance to have more of an authentic interaction with the local communities while learning their culture, traditions, and way of life.
Local Island Stays – Budget
The guesthouse accommodation chosen within the tours listed are decided upon based on a combination of comfort, services, and environment, and of course value for your dollar. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, AC, ceiling fans and complimentary Wi-Fi, whilst water, tea and coffee is always available. Most of the guesthouses are single or double story comprised of a maximum of 10 rooms. Some are set facing out to the ocean with a terrace or balcony. Others are built around a private garden or beach area, but in each you can be assured of a warm welcome.
Note: The Maldives is a Muslim country and therefore alcohol is not available on local islands. Subject to availability day/evening visits to resorts can be arranged. Bikinis are also not allowed to be worn on local island beaches; however most of our guest houses offer private gardens or private beach areas for guests.
Water Villa + Beach Front Combo
Staying in a water villa in the Maldives is a dream come true for many travelers. These luxurious overwater bungalows offer stunning views of the crystal-clear waters and marine life below. They are equipped with modern amenities such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and private decks with direct access to the ocean.
Understanding that variety is also a nice option we have combined tour options that include both the luxurious water villas with a beach bungalow option.

Adventure Cruising
In addition to luxurious water villas, beach bungalows, and lovely guesthouses, our guests can also explore the beauty of the Maldives on the water. Opting to explore on the teal blue water is a perfect way to visit multiple islands and atolls in one trip.
Cruising in the Maldives offers a different perspective of the islands, as you get to see them from the water. It also allows you to visit more remote areas that may not be accessible by land.
Liveaboard
Opting to explore the Maldives on the water by cruising between different atolls and islands is truly a magical experience with a multitude of options and ways and locations to choose from.
The privacy and solace of living on a boat without having to worry about the logistics of the operation is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will allow you a first hand experience of seeing some of the world’s most beautiful marvels – both underground and overground!
We are happy to offer a variety of options including combining a liveaboard experience with a resort or guest house stay as well. Options where you will always stay on the boat but have local and village experiences throughout some of the days, or solely liveaboard/cruise options.
Between February and March, one of our yachts could touch twelve of the fourteen Southern atolls during our ‘South Expedition’. You could book the yacht in exclusivity for the entire expedition or for part of it, using domestic flights to access the yacht’s location.

Maldives Travel and Tours is happy to assist your domestic travel within the Maldives. Transportation between islands can range from hours on a boat or a quick domestic flight, or waiting for a local seaplane. Depending on where your destination is the cost, timing, and option available can vary.
